We're going to try something a little different with the recap tonight, folks. We've had our say about what tonight's game in Detroit means, but there's just too much emotion out there for us to properly sum it up with our over-thought, eggheady words. Instead, we're taking a documentary approach to tonight's recap. It's October 23, 2013, the Senators are in Detroit to face the Red Wings, and here's how the day went.
Pre-Game
It's a #Sens Game Day! 7:30 p.m. tonight we visit Detroit! #GoSensGo
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 23, 2013
I know some of you are 'over it' and that's fine. Still- tonight is going to be...weird. The #Sens visit Daniel Alfredsson and the Wings.
- SensChirp (@SensChirp) October 23, 2013
GAME DAY! #Sens have the return of the Swede that's been top of mind all season -MIKA ZIBANEJAD!!!! #MikaFreed
- Sens Call-ups (@SensCallUps) October 23, 2013
Look I don't care about Alfie vs #Sens tonight. I'm over it. Just another game. *starts crying*
- Chop Shop Alex (@Iceman_AC) October 23, 2013
Kind of dreading tonight... guarantee "he" is going to score and I'm going to feel very conflicted about it. #sens

Alfredsson story not that big in Detroit. Sports page 4 in the Detroit News and page 5 in the Detroit Free Press. pic.twitter.com/q66FtRbXsI

Mike Babcock upon seeing the huge media crowd here for Alfie: "It's not a playoff game, is it?"
- Craig Custance (@CraigCustance) October 23, 2013
Never thought to say this b4, but former Captain's monotone voice is getting on my last nerve. #Sens #GameDay #Number11
- Deb the Disciple (@stickchick4ever) October 23, 2013
I'll always love #Alfie - The man was the heart and soul of an organization for far too long to dismiss. He's a #Sens legend, like it or not
- Kyle Chadwick (@Chaddey18) October 23, 2013
If anyone hears muffled sobs from my desk around 4:30 today, I'm just preventing myself from being TOO manly. #Sens #RedWings #Alfie
- Craig (@craig_church) October 23, 2013
#Sens update from Detroit: @CraigAnderson41 starts in goal, @MikaZibanejad & Corvo will play. (Kassian, Pageau & Wiercioch out) #GoSensGo
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 23, 2013
just a reminder that daniel alfredsson has never beaten the ottawa senators in a head-to-head matchup #fancystats
- Chet Sellers (@chet_sellers) October 23, 2013
Oui, Alfie contre Ottawa, ça va faire bizarre. Très bizarre. #Sens
- CR (@spz19) October 23, 2013
This feels like it's going to be at least a "6 beer" game. #Sens
- SensChirp (@SensChirp) October 23, 2013
Why do I feel like I should be watching tonight's #Sens game alone ... in the dark ... with a bottle of scotch ... listening to Alanis?
- Dan Hackett (@HaxDan) October 23, 2013
If we lose every other game this season, we gotta win tonight's game! #Sens #GoSensGo #Alfie #Ottawa
- Tim Chapman (@TheChapMan95) October 23, 2013
In their first game against the Sens, all former stars had big multi-point nights: Hossa (2g, 1a), Yashin (1g, 1a) & Heatley (2a).
- Ian Mendes (@ian_mendes) October 23, 2013
This is gonna be tough to watch... #Alfie #Sens #Wings
- Chris Stammers (@CKStamms) October 23, 2013
First Period
Okay TSN…are you trying to make us all cry? #Sens #Alfie
— LJ (@LJTee) October 23, 2013
I've never felt more anxious watching a game.. #sad #vomit #conflicted #sens
— Heather Chappell (@Heather_Eli) October 23, 2013
And just like we all drew it up, Eric Gryba with the snipe.
— DefenseMinister (@DefenseMinister) October 23, 2013
GOAL! SPEZZA!
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 23, 2013
THIS TEAM IS UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
— Chet Sellers (@chet_sellers) October 23, 2013
@BonksMullet it's like a dog marking his territory. #MineNow
— SensNation (@SensNation) October 23, 2013
Kyle Turris is putting in work. Draws a second penalty for the #Sens giving the Wings D problems with his speed. #GoSENSGo
— Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Ryan. PP snipe. 3-0. Bliss.
— Steve Warne (@TSNSteve) October 24, 2013
And apparently Jonas Gustavsson is still in the NHL.
— The 6th Sens (@6thSens) October 24, 2013
Colin Greening and Eric Gryba undo some of their good work earlier in the 1st. Greening w a bad penalty. Gryba an awful turnover. 3-1 #Sens
— AJ Jakubec (@AJonSports) October 24, 2013
End of the first period in Detroit, #Sens up 3-1. #GoSENSGo
— Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Second Period
ALFIE UPDATE: pretty invisible, actually.
— Horror Derrick (@derrickvonbrose) October 24, 2013
The Captain fires a shot off the end boards and is first on the ricochet to beat Gustavsson. That's his second. #Sens lead 4-1. #OCaptain
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
.@HockeyCanada hey, it's me again. Jason Spezza scored, this isn't a recording.
— James Scareton (@ThatFishCreigh) October 24, 2013
Hey Alfie, how's that C looking on Jason?
— Julie M. (@Julie_Sensweety) October 24, 2013
I would like this game to finish 19-1. Just FYI. #Sens #RedWings
— brianne (of tarth). (@missbriannie) October 24, 2013
Jared Cowen just bullied that puck away from Alfredsson. Turned into a great chance for Turris too. #Sens
— SensChirp (@SensChirp) October 24, 2013
So many Senator players that have reason to be motivated - are. Spezza, Karlsson, Turris, etc having great games. Entire team came to play.
- Daniel Slater (@dslatertv) October 24, 2013
End of two periods, #Sens lead the Wings 4-1. #GoSENSGo
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Third Period
Cowen makes it 5-1 just 1:50 into the 3rd.
- Brent Wallace (@tsn_wally) October 24, 2013
With Cowen's goal, all six #Sens blueliners have a point tonight. Erik Karlsson has two because of course he does.
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Hey Alfie, do you think you can come back from a 4 goal deficit? "Probably not"
- Julie M. (@Julie_Sensweety) October 24, 2013
"Daniel Alfredsson has scored against every team in the National Hockey League except one." Wait, which?
- Bonk's Mullet (@BonksMullet) October 24, 2013
Bobby adds another one, but the celebration is muted as MacArthur is slow to get up after crashing into the end boards. #Sens lead 6-1.
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
The only thing that could possibly make this game more perfect is a shot of Daniel Alfredsson breaking his stick on the bench. #Sens
- Luke Peristy (@LukePeristy) October 24, 2013
MacArthur is back on the ice for the #Sens.
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Gryba is Electric Player of the Game. Never thought that would happen.
- Steve On Sens (@SteveOnSens) October 24, 2013
SENS WIN! SENS WIN! SENS WIN!
- Ottawa Senators (@Senators) October 24, 2013
Post-Game
Well that went better than expected.
- Bonk's Mullet (@BonksMullet) October 24, 2013
6-1 is acceptable. I suppose.
- brianne (of tarth). (@missbriannie) October 24, 2013
That felt pretty good. Coming back home now w a little more confidence. #Sens
- Marc Methot (@MarcMethot3) October 24, 2013
I'm happy the #Sens won but wish it was less painful for #alfie
- soph (@sopher89) October 24, 2013
That'll do, Alfie... That'll do. #Sens
- Mike (@mself83) October 24, 2013
